Family Boxes
In 2007, food from the Brazos Valley Food Bank reached over 38,000 individuals from 15,000 households through our partner agencies – pantries, residential facilities, recreation centers, etc.
The Brazos Valley Food Bank realizes families are unique and have unique needs.
Some parents work days, some work nights and some work weekends. Sometimes finding a food pantry that is open when their need arises can be tough.
Some have special needs – a disability that makes them homebound or even a mental illness that limits their ability to do well in social settings.
Some do not have transportation. When they find someone who can drive them to get food assistance, at that particular time, no food pantry is open.
Some have already visited the local food pantry that month and have to wait until the next month to access services again. What do they do in the meantime?
Some are for the very first time in the lives having trouble making ends meet. They simply do not know who can help them. They have heard of the Brazos Valley Food Bank and call.
Some just show up.
For these reasons and others, not all of our hungry neighbors can access
food pantries when they are open.
In realizing these unique needs, the Brazos Valley Food Bank keeps Emergency Family Boxes on hand.
Family Boxes contain 16 nutritionally balanced items that can assist a family get through a crisis.
Since this program began in July 2007, the program has distributed over 200 Emergency Family Boxes to individuals and families from all the counties that we serve (Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Madison, Robertson and Washington).
Individuals/families that receive Emergency Family Boxes are always given 2-1-1 Call for Help referral information, a copy of our Emergency Food Assistance Referral Sheet (click to open this document) and are asked about applying for Food Stamps.
